This presentation describes the presence of mudboils in New York State. Three locations are described that have similar geohydrologic characteristics. The intent of the presentation is two-fold:  1) to provide information on mudboils and their characteristics, and; 2) to seek input from the audience about other mudboils that may exist elsewhere in New York or surrounding states.

The first part of the presentation provides an overview of the Tully Valley mudboils. Background on the mudboil phenomena, data collected and reported in several USGS reports, and videos of mudboil-induced land-surface subsidence will show the power of mudboil activity. The role of nearby historical brine-mining activities in exacerbating natural mudboil activity will be discussed.

The second part of this presentation deals with another set of mudboils found along the northwestern shore of Long Island. Similar geologic factors as those of the Tully mudboils will be highlighted, along with pictures of mudboil activity in the early 1900s along Alley Creek with similar attributes.

The third part of the presentation deals with a “new” set of mudboils found in western New York along Canaseraga Creek, which is currently being investigated by NYSDEC. The presenter has assisted NYSDEC by investigating the geology of the area and its similarities to the first two mudboil explanations.

The final part of the presentation discusses several "unique and possibly short-term" mudboil occurrences which do not have any similarities to the preceding situations. The presenter will also request input from attendees regarding other possible mudboil situations that they may have encountered in New York and/or nearby states.
