Field Excursion

 

"Tour Guide" - Meg Harris, Associate Professor of Earth Science at Onondaga Community College

Come to look at the Manlius and Onondaga Limestone. We will get some mine history, see active mine operations and have an opportunity to visit several horizons to collect and identify fossils, including the Devonian fish bone and teeth collecting area. The bentonite layers that are used for the absolute dating of these rocks will be accessible.

Saturday, October 21st 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Cost for CNYAPG members and their families:

$15.00/person, includes a box lunch

Cost for non-CNYAPG Members and their families:

$20.00/person, includes a box lunch

Because of safety issues at the mine, only children 15 years and older will be permitted on this trip. Please bring a hard hat and safety glasses if you have them.

DIRECTIONS:

From Route 481 take Jamesville Road (EXIT 2) - SOUTH

Look for the main quarry gates on your left (about ¼ mile south of Route 481)

Follow signs for the Hanson Industries Main Office - park in the main office parking area. (Hanson Industries – 315-469-3251)

Individual cars will not be allowed into the mine, we will be traveling in vans from the main parking lot. The tour will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m.
